There are also a few simple things you can do right now for a missing pet that can greatly increase the likelihood of locating your pet.

  1. Check the nooks and crannies on your property. In many cases the pet doesn’t run to far away.

  2. Talk to your neighbors! Kindly ask if they’ve seen or heard anything strange. The neighbors may even have your pet keeping it safe and warm for you. Get them to check the backyard and security/doorbell cameras. Many cameras have motion sensors and can reveal where the pet may have went.

  3. Take many walks around the area. Pets tend to stick to where they’re most familiar. In a lot of cases dogs will be seen travelling along the paths of least resistance like roads, alleys, sidewalks, hiking trails, rivers, streams, and clearings.

  4. Put out physical paper posters! Not everyone is on social media and if they are not everyone is on the missing pet pages. Even if they are on missing pet pages, most accounts don’t have most recent posts setting on by default.

  5. Scents can attract them back to the property! Leave at least 2 familiar scents on your property (1 in the front yard with the other being in the backyard) such as a recently worn t-shirt, cat/dog bed, water dish, or favorite toy. DO NOT PUT FOOD OUTSIDE! Placing food outside can be very dangerous for the missing pet as it usually attracts coyotes to the area!
